She has been collaborating with the Norwegian government for many years to seek cultural and religious protection for her people`s sacred ways.

Lone Beate Ebeltoft works as a Sami cultural guide with a Reindeer herder family in Tromsø and is one of the founders of a new nature-oriented religious society Naturfolk ( https://naturfolk.org/
) together with wisdom keepers from other cultural minorities in Norway, where they endeavor to preserve and protect the sacred nature sites now under serious threat from mining companies and the wind-turbine industry.

At the European Ecovillage Gathering, she shared the sacred ways her people have lived in natural housings in the arctic landscapes for over 10,000 years, hunting, gathering, and fishing sustainably without leaving any negative traces (or imprints).</video:description><video:content_loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/static/streaming-playlists/hls/429deddc-da92-45dc-add6-f50a2ee99baa/8a10b8c5-2d49-4fd1-bf3f-68c1448fd31b-master.m3u8</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/videos/embed/9e7JE1PWhR6nEjTuSjM3gm</video:player_loc><video:duration>2445</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>7</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2024-10-24T13:28:08.429Z</video:publication_date><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://tube.gen-europe.org/c/kevin.jordan_channel/videos">kevin.jordan_channel</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/w/arpTYu3itBQqrn4pqscKnW</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/lazy-static/thumbnails/d60f8b75-ffc4-4dc9-875f-8fb11f11e8d2.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>Dougald Hine on "Working in the Ruins." @ GEN European Ecovillage Gathering 2024</video:title><video:description>We had the privilege to hear from Dougald Hine, a visionary thinker who has spent much of his career exploring the intersection of environmental, social, and spiritual challenges of our time. As a co-founder of the Dark Mountain Project, Hine helped launch a movement that critically re-examines modernity's dominant narratives, such as progress and industrial civilization, especially in the face of ecological crises. His work calls on artists, thinkers, and storytellers to create spaces for new kinds of cultural responses, fostering dialogues on how to live meaningfully amidst uncertainty.

✨ At the Gathering, Dougald delivered a moving and thought-provoking speech that deeply resonated with the audience. He highlighted the importance of recognizing the realities of the current state of the world, encouraging us not to live in illusions about the scale of the crises we face. However, Dougald also urged us not to lose hope, stressing that what we are witnessing is not the end of the world itself, but rather the end of a dominant story about the world…</video:description><video:content_loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/static/streaming-playlists/hls/4c6e9195-5c7f-4454-ac62-53b238e1529c/b5bf69c9-9d1a-41b6-b7a9-e5b982adcae3-master.m3u8</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/videos/embed/arpTYu3itBQqrn4pqscKnW</video:player_loc><video:duration>2178</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>3</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2024-10-31T12:13:01.568Z</video:publication_date><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://tube.gen-europe.org/c/kevin.jordan_channel/videos">kevin.jordan_channel</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/w/dACC3K3tuBJiYQTCQBZM6q</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/lazy-static/thumbnails/96be0e2e-953e-4936-904f-6fbad82b96b9.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>Anja Lyngbaek's on Shifting Direction - The Power of Local (Part 2)</video:title><video:description>Anja Lyngbaek, a passionate localization activist and Programmes Director of Local Futures, graced the European Ecovillage Gathering with her wisdom on the urgent need to change course. A dedicated community builder and food grower, Anja emphasized the necessity of slowing down within the current global system and focusing on rebuilding local economies.

Over the years, Anja Lyngbaek has coordinated a variety of projects about the renewing of ecological and social well-being by strengthening communities and local economies, including the Economics of Happiness International Conference Series, the International Alliance for Localization and World Localization Day. Fluent in Spanish, English and Danish, she has been a spokesperson for localization on several continents. Anja divides her time between a Mexican ecovillage and a small island in the Danish Archipelago. She is a passionate community builder and food grower and is happiest with her hands in the soil. Anja holds a BSc in Rural Resource Management and an MPhil. in Agroforestry.

At the European Ecovillage Gathering, she gracefully touched upon the theme of our Gathering, emphasizing the urgency of slowing down to prevent accelerating down the road we are headed to within the dominant ruling system. Anja’s speech deconstructed the notions of debt economy, bringing light to the fact that the system created is man-made and can be remade. As one of the possible solutions she proposed the production of necessities closer to home, advocating for local economies with an abundance of examples from local communities across the world.</video:description><video:content_loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/static/streaming-playlists/hls/66038559-f832-4d22-9896-baf6a171d726/6480630e-d8dd-4c1b-b9a0-a020ff1ba1e1-master.m3u8</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/videos/embed/dACC3K3tuBJiYQTCQBZM6q</video:player_loc><video:duration>1332</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>0</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2024-10-31T18:40:30.313Z</video:publication_date><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://tube.gen-europe.org/c/kevin.jordan_channel/videos">kevin.jordan_channel</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/w/jnZJf8YyyZNCV2wj9hvojV</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/lazy-static/thumbnails/a37f2ae0-dc9e-4e04-add6-e634b023b130.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>Anja Lyngbaek's on Shifting Direction - The Power of Local (Part 1)</video:title><video:description>At the European Ecovillage Gathering 2024, Anja Lyngbaek shared her inspiring journey of experiencing the strength of local economies while living in Oaxaca, Mexico. Through vivid examples of daily trade in fresh produce, handmade goods, and local services, Anja painted a picture of a vibrant community where money circulates locally, sustaining livelihoods and fostering resilience.

In her workshop, Anja highlighted how localized economies support small-scale farmers, artisans, and community well-being, contrasting sharply with global chains that often drain resources away from local communities. She also delved into the broader impacts of localization, from job creation and stronger social connections to environmental sustainability. Anja emphasized global movements like community wealth building, agroecology, and cooperative initiatives, illustrating how people around the world are reclaiming economic power from large corporations to build resilient, local-living economies.

Interviewed by Teodora Rădulescu, MC of the Gathering and GEN Europe Council member, A’ida's words brought a deep reflection on the political dimensions of the ecovillage movement, shedding light on the systemic crises we face and challenging us to confront our own roles within these systems. It was a challenging session. A'ida tackled topics such as the many ongoing genocides including the genocide of her own people in Gaza right now, the urgent need to acknowledge where everyone present was contributing to and benefiting from the systems they oppose, and the urgent need to detach from those systems. A’ida spoke bravely about looking the “pain of the world” in the eyes and the need to acknowledge that “everything is political” and that “everything happening in the world is affecting each one of us”; declaring that “We need to take a stand for life, not for a side.”

Building on this, A’ida drew on the teachings of her community, Tamera advocating the need for love, living as a political force, and love our largest resource, to be at the core of any meaningful solution. As A’ida put it, “From this love comes the urge to plant, build, and to have the courage to strive for a better world. To grow life, to be life, and to protect life.”

A’ida’s keynote held up a mirror to GEN Europe, highlighting where we as an organization need to further educate ourselves on the social and political issues we strive to take a stand for. This includes learning how to create safe spaces to explore these topics without placing undue burden on the very people in vulnerable positions whom we claim to support, and whom we invite to share their stories publicly and engage in collective exploration.

We are grateful to Teodora Rădulescu for graciously holding the space and creating a grounding atmosphere for this challenging discussion. Their approach goes beyond creating ecovillages; it’s about aligning practical structures with visionary goals. Through innovative legal, financial, and governance strategies, “Les-Pas-Sages” empowers communities to take charge of their futures.

In their session, Vincent and Sandra shared how their model enables communities to thrive sustainably and independently. By fostering collective ownership and shared governance, “Les-Pas-Sages” offers a replicable framework for communities throughout Europe. It’s not just about building villages; it’s about cultivating resilience, cooperation, and a deep sense of responsibility for our planet.
The impacts are profound: the “Les-Pas-Sages” model supports not only the creation of new ecovillages but also provides communities with tools to reclaim governance, embrace local resilience, and align with their highest aspirations for living in harmony with the Earth. This conversation was held at the European Ecovillage Gathering 2025 in Manas Garden, Hungary.
Ross Jackson, co-founder of Gaia Trust and GEN Europe, reflected on the cohousing movement and his spiritual awakening. Using the caterpillar and butterfly metaphor, he spoke of "imaginal cells" of transformation.
Lucilla Borio, co-founder of Torri Superiore Ecovillage, shared stories from the early days when fax machines and letters held the movement together, urging us to keep trusting what we believe.
Macaco Tamerice, community leader at Damanhur and former GEN Europe CEO, highlighted inner work, collective resilience, and how regions like GEN Africa emerged through shared purpose.
Jake Jay-Lewin, co-founder of NextGEN, traced youth organizing's journey and emphasized creating spaces for young people to lead alongside elders.
This is both GEN Europe's history and a living testimony of collaboration across generations for a shared vision of communities thriving in harmony with people and planet.</video:description><video:content_loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/static/streaming-playlists/hls/aef27054-191c-4934-92ef-d4232bdaeaa9/9d816517-a4db-4a2e-8aa7-4f7e42cda1a0-master.m3u8</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/videos/embed/nAZbtfkGPtUkpNUPJJz2rk</video:player_loc><video:duration>3633</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>7</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2025-10-06T18:47:46.682Z</video:publication_date><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://tube.gen-europe.org/c/viola.astolfi_channel/videos">viola.astolfi_channel</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/w/f1eRNoxqT7ibjoa6VRXn5y</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/lazy-static/thumbnails/5895fa14-f9a5-4a9c-8326-e71c15da78be.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>András Takács-Sánta on The Power of Community</video:title><video:description>We're honored to share this keynote by András Takács-Sánta — Hungarian ecologist, writer, and community builder — who invited us to reflect on crisis and ecological thought. This session was held at the European Ecovillage Gathering 2025 in Manas Garden, Hungary.
András reminded us that crisis brings both despair and opportunity to build something better. He cautioned against abandoning mitigation for adaptation alone, calling this a betrayal of ecology itself — which is about loving and protecting all life.
He spoke of active hope: acting for good without guarantees, trusting others will do the same, believing in collective power. Nobody is powerless. Strategies include participatory democracy and redefining the good life beyond consumerism.
Ecovillages, he emphasized, embody these ideas — not as isolated utopias but as living examples that can flourish everywhere. From Hungarian research programs to global networks, they are seeds of a new ecological civilization.
His message: every crisis is an opportunity, and we all have power to act. With courage and love for life, we can create a just, regenerative world.
Deep gratitude to András for reminding us transformation's seeds are already here.</video:description><video:content_loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/static/streaming-playlists/hls/71687b5e-dc9f-4ae0-9770-81c80a780584/f88dca79-f694-4b2f-99d2-4a2f79715f84-master.m3u8</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/videos/embed/f1eRNoxqT7ibjoa6VRXn5y</video:player_loc><video:duration>1579</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>2</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2025-10-06T22:45:00.330Z</video:publication_date><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://tube.gen-europe.org/c/viola.astolfi_channel/videos">viola.astolfi_channel</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/w/4XEcyDS2MH7mQX4vAaXfzu</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/lazy-static/thumbnails/57320ea3-6fb2-4201-b6c1-fc738b05300d.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>Daniel Greenberg, Yuluka Kankurua, Sonita Mbah, Thao Ngo-Kin and Steffen Emrich on The Ecovillage...</video:title><video:description>We're honored to share this powerful keynote with Daniel Greenberg (GENNA), Yuluka Kankurua (CASA Latina), Sonita Mbah (GEN Africa), Thao Ngo-Kin (GENOA), and Steffen Emrich (GEN Europe) — voices from across the Global Ecovillage Network reflecting on resilience, activism, and community. This conversation was held at the European Ecovillage Gathering 2025 in Manas Garden, Hungary.
Yuluka Kankurua shared CASA Latina's 20-year journey weaving together Latin American communities with a bold political voice: Mother Earth grants us rights. Daniel highlighted new initiatives like the Communiversity and Post-Growth Alliance, building bridges between networks. Thao Kin described climate vulnerability and resilience in Asia-Oceania, where communities rebuild after disasters: "the compost of one community can be fertile soil for another”. Sonita Mbah shared moving stories from Africa — schools transformed into ecovillages, governments recognizing them as climate resilience models, proving ecovillages create bottom-up systemic change. Steffen Emrich reflected on European communities' privilege and responsibility, emphasizing that GEN is all of us — building on trust, solidarity, and shared purpose.
Deep gratitude to all who carry GEN's vision into action worldwide.</video:description><video:content_loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/static/streaming-playlists/hls/2010dd51-61e7-4053-a2f9-e884c7662eb6/52b97a37-c9fa-4fcb-b805-568679ffda81-master.m3u8</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/videos/embed/4XEcyDS2MH7mQX4vAaXfzu</video:player_loc><video:duration>3918</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>5</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2025-10-06T22:48:04.960Z</video:publication_date><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://tube.gen-europe.org/c/viola.astolfi_channel/videos">viola.astolfi_channel</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/w/pAuE4uFwwtFE1PyfN5kgMg</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/lazy-static/thumbnails/40a0f3d2-926b-4a1e-9ee2-b5e29784c64d.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>Anna Kovasna and NextGEN on The Future of the Ecovillage Movement</video:title><video:description>We're honored to share this keynote with Anna Kovasna (GEN International, Kincentric Leadership) and NextGEN voices — a powerful reflection on communities, resilience, and the seeds we carry into uncertain times. This session was held at the European Ecovillage Gathering 2025 in Manas Garden, Hungary.
Anna Kovasna reminded us that ecovillages are now essential to mainstream crisis response. She called us to honor both the depth of crises — climate breakdown, extinction, injustice — and the depth of love within our movement. "The future is already here, but unevenly distributed." She urged fierce action: protect our communities, defend the commons, stand with Indigenous peoples.
NextGEN voices — Usignolo, Matteo, Johannes, Arianna, and Dijana — shared their visions as the youth wing. They spoke of interdependence, healing spaces, and communities as lighthouses of alternatives. They called for alliances with social housing, antiracism, ecofeminism, and degrowth movements to keep GEN relevant.
Together, they invited us to face reality with courage, practice equity, and nurture tomorrow's seeds — proving we're not alone in creating regenerative futures.
Deep gratitude to Anna Kovasna and NextGEN for their vision and commitment.</video:description><video:content_loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/static/streaming-playlists/hls/bf13232b-29e7-497b-81d5-cf520ad68dd5/e5bc716d-ecb2-4148-a2bd-4bf27470f9ec-master.m3u8</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/videos/embed/pAuE4uFwwtFE1PyfN5kgMg</video:player_loc><video:duration>3853</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>5</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2025-10-06T22:46:35.196Z</video:publication_date><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://tube.gen-europe.org/c/viola.astolfi_channel/videos">viola.astolfi_channel</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/c/gen_europe/videos</loc></url><url><loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/c/carolin.waldmann_channel/videos</loc></url><url><loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/c/launch_thrive/videos</loc></url><url><loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/c/kevin.jordan_channel/videos</loc></url><url><loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/c/viola.astolfi_channel/videos</loc></url><url><loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/a/angel.matilla/video-channels</loc></url><url><loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/a/carolin.waldmann/video-channels</loc></url><url><loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/a/kevin.jordan/video-channels</loc></url><url><loc>https://tube.gen-europe.org/a/viola.astolfi/video-channels</loc></url></urlset>
